How do I apply?
You apply for EITC when you file your federal tax return.
- If you have qualifying children, you can use Form 1040 or 1040A and you must fill out and attach Schedule EITC. You will not get EITC if you use Form 1040EZ or you do not attach Schedule EITC.
- If you are married, you must file a joint return.
- If you do not have qualifying children, you can use any form including the 1040EZ. On the EITC line on the form, write “EITC” or the dollar amount of the EITC. You do not need to attach Schedule EITC.
- You do not need to figure out your EITC; the IRS can do it for you if you wish.
What is Advance EITC?
If you are raising children, you may receive a portion of your EITC in your paycheck throughout the year. Advance EITC is not taxable income. Receiving extra money in your paychecks can help you meet your monthly expenses for rent, groceries and transportation.
If you have at least one qualifying child and you expect your income for 2007 to be less than $33,000 ($35,000 if married), you can get Advanced EITC. All you need to do is fill out IRS Form W5 and give it to your employer.
If your employer does not have the form, call 800–TAX-FORM and one will be sent to you or you can download it on the
www.irs.gov website.
