HOUSING ASSISTANCE

Section 8 Rental Assistance

Section 8 helps low income families pay a portion of their rent. Typically, families find an apartment or house to rent and the landlord agrees to accept Section 8 subsidies for a portion of the rent. Families pay the rest of the rental cost.

Because of eligibility requirements and waiting lists, you will need to speak with a Housing Specialist to see if you qualify and get application assistance:

  • If you live in or work in the City of Redding, call the City of Redding Housing Authority at 225-4048.

  • For all others, call the Shasta County Housing Authority at 225-5160.
For housing options not operated by the housing authority, call 225-4048 to get a subsidized housing referral list sent to you.

If you need information about renters rights and responsibilities, contact the Housing Authority at 225-4048 and request a copy of the Fair Housing Packet. The packet includes the Fair Housing Resource List, the California Tenant Rights booklet and a booklet on small claims court.

Down Payment Assistance

Down payment assistance programs are loans that help low income families purchase their first home. These loans generally have no monthly fees and are due when families sell or vacate the property.

For information on eligibility and other requirements, it is best to speak with a housing specialist.

  • If you live in or work in the City of Redding, call 225-4048.
  • For all others, call the Shasta County Housing Authority at 225-5160.
If you dream of owning your own house and just don’t know where you would come up with the down payment, this may just be your answer.
